Rectum Cancer

Rectal Cancer

Rectal cancer originates in the rectum, the last several inches of the large intestine that connect to the anus. While it shares many similarities with colon cancer, the treatment approach for rectal cancer is often distinct due to the anatomical location within the confined space of the pelvis. Early detection is paramount, as treatments are highly effective when the disease is identified at an early stage.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of rectal cancer can be persistent and may include a noticeable change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or a change in the consistency of your stool. A key indicator is rectal bleeding or finding blood in your stool. Patients may also experience abdominal pain, cramping, or a persistent sensation that your bowel does not empty completely. Additionally, the presence of narrow stools or unintentional weight loss should be evaluated by a specialist immediately to rule out malignancy.

Risk Factors

Risk factors for rectal cancer are similar to those of colon cancer, including a family history of colorectal cancer, older age, and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. Lifestyle factors—including a diet high in processed meats, low fiber intake, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption—further increase susceptibility. Genetic syndromes, such as Lynch syndrome, also significantly heighten the risk and may necessitate earlier and more frequent screening.

Diagnostic Approach

A precise diagnosis is critical for managing rectal cancer. This usually involves a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a proctoscopy or colonoscopy to visualize the area and collect tissue biopsies. Because the rectum is located in the narrow pelvic cavity, advanced imaging such as pelvic MRI or endorectal ultrasound is essential. These imaging tools help assess the depth of tumor invasion and involvement of nearby lymph nodes, which allows for a multidisciplinary approach—potentially incorporating pre-operative radiation or chemotherapy to optimize surgical outcomes.
