Colon Cancer

Colon Cancer

Colon cancer, often referred to as colorectal cancer, begins when cells in the large intestine start to grow uncontrollably. Most colon cancers originate as small, non-cancerous clumps of cells called polyps that form on the inner lining of the colon. Over time, some of these polyps can transform into malignant tumors, potentially invading deeper layers of the intestinal wall and spreading to other parts of the body if not identified and removed early.

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of colon cancer are often subtle, which is why regular screening is so critical. Early warning signs frequently include persistent changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or a narrowing of the stool that lasts for more than a few days.

Patients may also notice rectal bleeding or blood in their stool, which can appear bright red or make the stool look black and tarry. As the disease advances, it may lead to persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas, or pain, alongside a lingering feeling that the bowel does not empty completely. Unexplained weight loss and chronic fatigue, often stemming from anemia, are also common clinical indicators that warrant immediate investigation.

Risk Factors

Several factors can influence the development of colon cancer. Advancing age is a significant factor, as the risk increases for individuals over the age of 50. Lifestyle choices play a major role as well; diets low in fiber and high in processed meats or saturated fats are linked to higher risks. Furthermore, individuals with sedentary lifestyles, those who smoke, and heavy alcohol consumers face increased vulnerability. Beyond these lifestyle choices, a personal or family history of colorectal polyps or cancer, as well as chronic inflammatory conditions like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, can substantially elevate an individual's susceptibility to the disease.

Diagnostic Approach

The diagnostic process for colon cancer relies on a combination of screening and detailed visual examination. A colonoscopy is considered the gold standard, as it allows the physician to view the entire length of the colon and identify and remove any suspicious polyps before they become malignant. During this procedure, tissue samples are taken if abnormalities are found. If cancer is suspected or confirmed, additional diagnostic tests such as CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis are utilized to determine the stage of the cancer and check for potential spread to other organs. These assessments are essential for crafting a tailored treatment plan that ensures the most effective outcome for the patient.
