Polypectomy

The procedure is typically performed during an endoscopy or colonoscopy, requiring no additional incisions. Once a polyp is identified, we use specialized instruments passed through the endoscope to remove it. For small polyps, biopsy forceps may be sufficient. For larger or stalked polyps, we use a technique called a "snare polypectomy," where a wire loop is placed around the base of the polyp and tightened to remove it, often using a small amount of electrical current to cauterize the site and prevent bleeding.

A polypectomy is generally painless because the inner lining of the digestive tract lacks pain-sensing nerves. Most patients experience no discomfort after the procedure and can resume their normal activities immediately. Once removed, the polyp is sent to a pathology lab to determine its exact type and whether it was benign or precancerous, which helps us determine the appropriate timeline for your future screenings.
