Polypectomy

Polypectomy

A polypectomy is a specialized, minimally invasive procedure used to remove polyps—abnormal growths—from the inner lining of the digestive tract, most commonly in the colon or stomach. Many polyps are benign, but some types, known as adenomatous polyps, have the potential to transform into cancer over time.

Polypectomy Procedure

By identifying and removing these growths during a routine endoscopy or colonoscopy, we can effectively prevent them from progressing into malignancy. This makes polypectomy one of the most important preventative measures in gastrointestinal oncology.

How It Is Performed

The procedure is typically performed during an endoscopy or colonoscopy, requiring no additional incisions. Once a polyp is identified, we use specialized instruments passed through the endoscope to remove it. For small polyps, biopsy forceps may be sufficient. For larger or stalked polyps, we use a technique called a "snare polypectomy," where a wire loop is placed around the base of the polyp and tightened to remove it, often using a small amount of electrical current to cauterize the site and prevent bleeding.

After the Procedure

A polypectomy is generally painless because the inner lining of the digestive tract lacks pain-sensing nerves. Most patients experience no discomfort after the procedure and can resume their normal activities immediately. Once removed, the polyp is sent to a pathology lab to determine its exact type and whether it was benign or precancerous, which helps us determine the appropriate timeline for your future screenings.

Safety and Expertise

While polypectomy is a routine procedure, it requires expert precision, particularly when dealing with large, flat, or difficult-to-reach polyps. Our clinic utilizes advanced endoscopic visualization to ensure the entire polyp is removed cleanly, minimizing the risk of recurrence and ensuring patient safety. We provide detailed follow-up care to ensure that your digestive health remains monitored and protected.
