During the procedure, which is performed via a simple laparoscopy, a small amount of chemotherapy is converted into a pressurized mist within the closed abdomen. The pressure gradient created during the procedure improves the delivery of the drug into the tumor tissue compared to liquid delivery methods. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, it is generally well-tolerated, allowing patients to undergo repeated treatments at regular intervals to control the disease progression and manage symptoms effectively.

PIPAC is primarily utilized for patients with non-resectable peritoneal metastases from various primary cancers, including gastric, ovarian, and colorectal origins.
