Achalasia Oesophagus

What is Achalasia?

Achalasia is a rare, chronic disorder of the esophagus that makes it difficult for food and liquid to pass into the stomach. It occurs when the nerves in the esophagus become damaged, preventing the lower esophageal sphincter from relaxing properly to allow food to enter the stomach.

Achalasia Oesophagus

Patients often experience difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), regurgitation of undigested food, chest pain, and unintentional weight loss. Early diagnosis and expert intervention are crucial to restore normal esophageal function and improve quality of life.

Treatment & Surgical Management

We provide a comprehensive range of interventions tailored to the severity of the condition:

  • Heller Myotomy: A gold-standard surgical procedure where the muscle fibers of the lower esophageal sphincter are cut to allow food to pass easily into the stomach.
  • Laparoscopic Approach: Most surgeries are performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, resulting in smaller incisions, less pain, and a faster recovery.
  • POEM (Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy): An advanced, incision-less endoscopic procedure to treat achalasia by creating a tunnel within the esophageal wall to perform the myotomy.
  • Diagnostic Workup: We utilize high-resolution manometry and barium swallow studies to accurately assess esophageal motility and customize the surgical plan.
